NATIONAL MUSEUM & VIMANMEK MANSION

Marvel at the rich Thai history and culture at the National Museum, which holds one of the world’s best collections of Southeast Asian Art. The main building was built in 1783 as the “Palace to the Front” used for surrogate kings or Prince Wang Na. During the reign of King Rama V, the first public museum exhibited the royal collection of King Rama IV. It moved to its present site in 1874. Visit the excellent artifact galleries from different periods: Dvaravati, Khmer, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya until Ratanakosin and many more exquisite Asian antiques.

The majestic Vimanmek mansion or “cloud mansion” is the world’s biggest teakwood mansion.
 
This three-story mansion, which was moved from Koh Si Chang, served as the private residence for King Rama V in the early 19th century. You will marvel as its extraordinary lightness which is enhanced by a reflecting pond and be fascinated with the combination of Western architecture and Thai delicacy. Various of personal possessions of King Rama V can be viewed, including art work and antiques, including the first typewriter brought to Thailand.
