Phil travel guide Bangkok Thailand

Not long ago, while I was watching TV I saw the plight of people who were suffering from the effects of the recent floods in Thailand. It seemed to me these people were in need of urgent supplies of food and other essential items, so I decided to see if there was something I could do.

After making contact with the Secretary of the Governor of Lop Buri, who was responsible for coordinating assistance to those affected by the floods, I contacted some of my friends in Switzerland to see if they would like to participate in helping these people. They were happy to help and we eventually managed to collect a total of 50,737 THB ( approx 1,585 USD ). I have to say this was the first time I had organized an event of this kind.

In the early hours of 5 October 2008 I departed Bangkok for Lop Buri province with my dear friend, Mr Fredi from Switzerland, our lovely driver, Mr Khun Taweesak Boonwisetrat and his sister Khun Jindarat Noibuathip from Bangkok.

Lop Buri is located about 150 km north of Bangkok and is known as the city of Apes, where a troop of very friendly monkeys live around the famous Hindu temple ( 13-14th Century AD ) built during the reign of King Narai the great from the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

Our final destination was the village of Baan Pu Kha, about 20 km from the town of Lop Buri, where we would distribute the food and other items we had purchased.

A couple weeks earlier, I discussed my idea with Khun Bao Thongdee, the chief administrator for the villages of the Baan Mee District. Mr Thongdee is responsible for 3 villages containing 486 families (approximately 1,800 people). He informed me that flooding in this area has always been a problem in the rainy season due to the low lying land there.

We purchased the supplies (vegetable oil, fish sauce, rice, egg and condensed milk, etc) from the Tesco Lotus branch in Lop Buri. Initially, we encountered some difficulty purchasing such large quantities of vegetable oil due to the store’s policy of selling only limited quantities of this item in Thailand

Fortunately, with the assistance of the Lop Buri Plaza Manager, Khun Yuvadee Changbang, an exception was made in our case, once I explained our purpose. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all her staff who volunteered to carry the supplies to the village.

When we arrived at the town’s meeting hall, we were greeted by many elderly people with happy faces. They were very patient, especially since we had been delayed for two hours due to some unforeseen circumstances, including transportation problems - we eventually needed 4 small pick-up trucks.

We re-packed all the supplies into smaller packages and assisted in their distribution to all the families there.

I would like to say thank you to my sister and her family who handled a pick-up truck for the day. Furthermore, this enterprise would not have been successful had it not been for the generosity of some people from Switzerland, including Mr Alfred Spiess, Mr Heinz Gruenfelder, Mr Toni Sutter, Dr Christian Marder and Mr Heinz Bucher as well as my Thai friends, Khun Woraseth Wutdhiphanasat and Khun Thanapa Chouy-Kaew.

I am sure that everyone was very happy at the success of this event and I would like to continue doing this kind of work as much as I can, according to the following words.

ANYWAY

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered

Love them anyway

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives

Do good anyway

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies

Succeed anyway

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow

Do good anyway

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable

Be honest and frank anyway

What you spend years building maybe destroyed overnight

Build anyway

People really need help but may attack you if you help them

Help them anyway

Give the world the best you have and you will get kicked in the teeth

Give the world the best you have got

ANYWAY
