The district of Silom has evolved from rural farmland into a major financial center, complete with banks, nightclubs and condominiums. Numerous cultural influences are present due to Silom’s previous role as a major shipping port. Diversity has played a hand in making the area an epicenter of gay life, with many local venues catering to alternative lifestyles. Countless gay nightclubs and go-go bars are located along Silom Road.

Even already in 1999, over 20,000 guests flocked to Silom for the first Bangkok Gay Festival. Hailed as the first event of its kind in Southeast Asia, festival attendees came from Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
